Real Stories of Impact
Meet Blaze & Bree
Brother and sister team Blaze and Bree were motivated to participate in Red Socks Challenge for their mum Angie, who has lived with kidney disease her whole adult life.
This sibling team inspired others to donate to Kidney Health Australia by running 200km over the month of October in 5km bursts, they shared their updates through social media videos, sharing a kidney fact on video for each km.
Watching them in action was inspiring and incredibly informative.
"Kidney failure is relentless dialysis isn’t a cure, it’s survival and seeing her fight through the physical and emotional toll day after day has been incredibly hard. What’s been even tougher is feeling helpless at times, wishing I could take away even a part of her pain but not being able to. All I can do is be there, support her and help raise awareness so that others better understand what people on dialysis really go through." - Blaze
Meet Adam
In 2012, Adam was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy, by 2019, he began dialysis while waiting for a kidney transplant. He received a transplant in Dec 2019, but sadly a few months later he was diagnosed with aspergillus, a severe fungal mould infection that had spread to his lungs, skin, brain and heart.
He then spent the next seven months in hospital, undergoing seven complicated surgeries to remove the infection that was rapidly taking hold of his body. Finally in August 2020 he was able to return home on a trial antifungal medication whilst remaining on dialysis three times a week.
Despite this, in 2025, Adam set and achieved the goal of running the Brisbane marathon while on Dialysis. He wanted to complete the run with a time of 5 hours, to represent the time he spends dialysing at home. Adam is one of the only people in the world to complete this feat and likely the first in Australia.
"Getting up from blow after blow, fighting every day in hospital to survive then out of hospital to recover, I have experienced 10 lifetimes worth of incredible physical pain."
