My Red Socks Challenge for Kidney Health

In May of 2024, I was diagnosed with autoimmune IgA Vasculitis. Along with various other complications, IgA Vasculitis can cause kidney disease/damage. In 2026, I was diagnosed with IgA Nephropathy (IgAN) - a type of kidney disease that causes damage to the filters in the kidneys. This is incurable, and while treatable, 1/3 of people with IgA Nephropathy develop kidney failure within 10-20 years. 

Being diagnosed with kidney disease at 25 years old was life changing. Battling new information, specialist doctors, and many uncertainties has taken its toll both on myself and my family. While already dealing with nerve damage, pain, and autoimmune conditions, the diagnosis of kidney disease was something none of us expected. 

Due to my new personal connection to kidney health, this October, I have committed to the Red Socks Challenge, to stand with Australians living with kidney disease.  

I will be walking a total of 60km in October to honour the hours those with kidney disease spend on dialysis - raising awareness and helping fund better care.
