My Red Socks Run for Kidney Health

I am the father of a remarkable, resilient, and brave young boy battling chronic kidney disease. At the tender age of four, our lives were forever changed when our son was diagnosed with a rare kidney disease, a condition so uncommon it affects only one in a million Australians.

For the past three years, our family has navigated a world filled with more medical appointments, blood tests and medicines than most people experience in a lifetime. Our son shows courage beyond his years, enduring countless needle pricks, doctor visits, and medications. He's a true warrior.

For many people living with chronic kidney disease, the reality of dialysis is a daily struggle. It's a treatment requiring 60 hours per month, a time commitment that consumes lives and takes an immense toll on patients and their families. This is a life we hope to prevent.

This is why I am sharing our story and asking for your support. Your donation to Kidney Health Australia will fund critical research, provide essential resources for families like ours, and help raise awareness about the devastating impact of kidney disease.

The Red Sock Run is officially done tonight. We’ve run, walked, hopped, skipped, star jumped and squatted along the way.

My red socks may be tired, but the mission isn't. We joined this campaign to shine a light on the 60 hours of dialysis people endure each month, connected to a machine. We're raising money for Kidney Health Australia to find an end to this by 2050. 1 in 6 hospitalisations in Australia are due to kidney disease.

Hopefully you've followed my blog and my '60 challenges', including the ones that don’t always go to plan. It's been fun doing them.

Thanks to everyone who's donated, walked with us, exercised with us and simply shared words of encouragement. All this is to help us closer to a future free from dialysis!

Special guest for a 60 challenge

Thursday 30th Oct

You know you've got great support when your basketball team mates are willing to help with raising awareness by completing a 60 challenge. I asked him to write about the experience. Well, in line with the theme that things don't always go to plan with these challenges, have a read of what my good mate Vai shared with me below :D 

 

"Today Gavin and I started talking about his son, in which I'm grateful that he was willing to share with me. In the conversation he explained how people with kidney disease goes through 60hrs a month in treatments etc and hopefully we can end kidney dialysis by 2050. 

And asked - would I be willing to do a 60 challenge for the awareness of the Red Socks Run? Of course I said yes, it’s a good cause. The challenge was to complete 60 squats. We started recording on his phone and I was about 20 in before he got a phone call from anonymous (IYKYK) so we got cut there. I said we'll do it again after our basketball game, guess what - we forgot! So when I got home, I got straight to work and pumped out the 60.  LETS GO!”

60 stair step challenge

Thursday 30th Oct
I headed over to Barangaroo to sneak in 2 x 60 challenges. The challenge was to walk up 60 steps and simply enjoy the view. 

There's 2 good spots for this - 1 at High Steps and the other at Gira Gira steps. This one I was able to complete and enjoy a great view of Barangaroo.

Thursday 30th Oct
Today's 60 challenge was to complete 60 star jumps before a soccer match. We got about halfway before the little legs ran out of puff - "can't get too tired before the game", I was told, of course. 

One of these days we'll complete a challenge :D 

We'll complete the other half before next week's match.

Halloween House Hunt

Sunday 26th Oct
In today's challenge, we attempted to find 60 houses with Halloween decorations in 60 minutes.

It seemed easy enough with 7 houses on our street alone. However, after walking around for a few blocks, including a pit stop at the basketball court, we could only find 1 other house before it started to rain. So we did 60 skips as well.

Maybe there will be more on Halloween :D

The boys were helping me get my steps up so we parked a little bit further away from the shops. Gave us an opportunity to show off our new Red Socks Run tote bag.

60 x 3s?

Monday 20th Oct
My next 60 challenge was to shoot 60 x 3s. Quite a challenge. In the end, I did 6 sets of 10 shooting 2/10, 3/10, 5/20 (people like to come up to me to chat in the morning for some reason - I do like a chat), 5/10 (my best set) and finishing off with 3/10. 

I did that in about 45 minutes so I think I needed another hour to make 60 but time ran out. I'll have to block out a lot longer next time.

I would have shot from the middle or the right side but .. you know ... the sun was in my eyes, so I had to shoot from the shorter left side since someone swung the ring :D 

60 Free Throws

Thursday 9th Oct
I got to the basketball court early for today's challenge. To shoot 60 Free Throws in honor of the 60 hours a month people on dialysis spend on treatment.

I was able to complete the challenge in 16 minutes and 41 seconds. The trick is to shoot on a ring with a broken net so the ball bounces back towards you :D 

I'll try and beat the time next week.

Sock It on tour - Galipoli Steps

Monday 6th Oct
First stop - the top of Galipoli steps at Seaforth. Our goal was to actually walk up 60 stair steps in honor of the 60 hours a month people on dialysis spend on treatment and take a photo from there. But due to a minor ankle injury, we ended up spending 60 seconds taking photos instead.

We will do 60 stair steps another time :D

Now, I promised a run, we are getting ready for runs. My socks are ready to go.
