My Red Socks Challenge for Kidney Health

People on dialysis spend around 60 hours every month connected to a machine.

This October, I have
committed to the Red Socks Challenge, to stand with Australians living with kidney disease.

I will be taking on 60km in October to honour the hours spent on dialysis - raising awareness and helping fund better care.

Please donate to support a better future for people with kidney disease.

My Red Sock Challenge

Wednesday 7th Oct
For this challenge I'm aiming to do 30 minutes active time on top of my regular walking/exercise.  I'm looking at doing this on my exercise bike.

Gardening 2

Monday 5th Oct
this week I got into my garden and planted out the beneficial flowering plants - Sunflowers, Sweet Peas and Flanders Field Poppies.
I have ordered my veggie seeds from the Diggers Club after mapping out my veggie squares in the remainder of the veggie patch.

Gardening

Friday 25th Sep
On top of my movement challenge, I’ve set myself my gardening challenge too.  My gardener has cleared out an area for my veggie garden focusing on kidney friendly foods - cucumbers, carrots, celery , corn, zucchini’s and herbs.  I’ll still plant pumpkins, capsicums and tomatoes and share more of the produce with friends and neighbours.  And of course I’ll have lots of seedlings to share for Halloween instead of chocolates.

Focusing on my well-being 3

Friday 25th Sep
My friend Denise and I started going out regularly sharing our love of gardening.  We have visited several of the Digger's club gardens,  Ripponlea Gardens and the Dandenong Botanical Gardens over the past few months.  Being in nature and friendship have helped me focus on things away from all the medical appointments.

Focusing on my well-being 2

Friday 25th Sep
My friends and family have been a great support to me during this life changing event.   My friends Julie and Denise  have helped me with transportation to and from dialysis when my family haven't been able to. I'm now able to drive myself but I'm forever grateful for the people around me.

Focusing on my well-being 1

Friday 25th Sep
When I was first diagnosed,  my sister Jenni,  a trained art therapist,  taught me how to make flowers using pipe cleaners. The nurses were fascinated by the flowers I made,  and I left a bouquet along with a mindful colouring poster as a thank you for all their care during my stay.

Fistuloplasty 23rd September 2026

Friday 25th Sep
This week I was back in hospital for a procedure called a fistuloplasty.  It's a procedure where a balloon is inserted into my fistula to widen the artery and vein to maintain access. Back to dialysis on the 24th September and normal activities in about 4 days.

Returning to work 3rd July 2026

Friday 25th Sep
Today I returned to work.  Not my role as ECT(Early Childhood Teacher), by a day of training to update my professional development,  after being of sick leave for nearly 9 months.   Once I've completed my training over the next 2 weeks, I will go to assist with administrative tasks before hopefully returning to working with the children.

Removal of my permacath 6th May 2026

Friday 25th Sep
My permacath removal surgery happened today. It was first scheduled for March,  but due to the complications of cramping, nausea,  vomiting and bruising,  it has finally happened. In about 1 week I'll be able to shower without waterproof dressings, take a bath and finally go to the pool for a  swim.  God I've missed having swimming as part of my exercise

Fistula surgery 23rd December 2025

Friday 25th Sep
All I want for Christmas is...
Well I didn't really wish for surgery, but this is the next step in my medical journey. Having a fistula will mean less chance of infections,  not to mention having a shower without having to cover half my chest in waterproof dressing or being able to take a bath or go swimming.

Going Home 23rd November 2025

Friday 25th Sep
Finally I am well enough to leave hospital.  I started haemodialysis on the 17th November,  and have been doing it 3 times a week.  I've got to meet lovely and dedicated nurses, one being Nathan, who will be taking over my care when I begin my treatments at Malvern Kidney Clinic.

1st Surgery 15th November 2025

Friday 25th Sep
Today I have had surgery for a permocath.  This is a temporary site to be able to receive Hemodialysis. This is a lifesaving medical procedure to filter my blood of waste, salts and excess fluids as my kidneys are failing to do the process properly.

The diagnosis 14th November 2025

Friday 25th Sep
Yesterday I was admitted to the  emergency department of Cabrini Hospital for severe aenemia and dehydration.  After numerous tests,  including full body CT scan, IV fluids drips and several blood transfusions I have been diagnosed with Renal failure.

Using my fistula for the first time 7th February 2026

Friday 25th Sep
After getting clearance from my vascular surgeon yesterday,  today my fistula was used for the first time.  It was extremely painful to have the needle inserted into my arm, but it was nothing compared to the severe cramping,  nausea and vomiting that I had for close to 1 hour,  before I fell asleep.  This seemed to reset my body.
