October Red Socks Challenge!
People on dialysis spend around 60 hours every month connected to a machine. Dialysis is needed for people with end stage kidney failure, of which the number one cause in Australia is type 2 diabetes. Both diabetes and CKD disproportionally affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Cape York Peninsula has a population of around 15,000 people - of which 52% are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Being on dialysis completely changes the life of a person - being connected to a machine for 60hrs a week makes it hard to work, support family and disrupts everyday life.
This October, our team have committed to the Red Socks Challenge, to stand with Australians, especially those in remote areas living with kidney disease. We will be taking on 60km in October to honour the hours spent on dialysis — raising awareness and helping fund better care.
