My Achievements

My Red Socks Run for Kidney Health

This October, I’m going to join the Red Socks Run as life depends on it.

By walking 30km (aiming for 60km), I want to raise awareness of the 60hrs + that people affected by kidney disease need to spend on dialysis each month. My mum spends 8 hours every night

Please donate to my page to raise funds for research into life-saving treatments, and provide support to individuals and families affected by kidney failure.

There currently is no cure, just dialysis.

Personal experience with Kidney Disease

Saturday 12th Oct
As most people know, my mum was diagnosed with IgA nephropathy in her 20s, also known as Berber’s disease, which is a disease of the kidney and the immune system.

Her kidneys have deteriorated over time and last year she was told she would need to start dialysis. Mum opted for peritoneal dialysis which means she spends 8 hours overnight hooked up to a machine which pushes fluid into her peritoneum and drains it out.

Sure, this process sounds great that she can do it at home during sleep, but there is “drain pain” which causes multiple night wake ups, rubbish of 2 boxes, 3 bags and all the cords each night, having to time her sleep every night so that she is in bed for at least 8 hours, and daily blood pressure, weight and miscellaneous tests..

This is just the start of it all. To know this is the only thing keeping her alive, with no other solution or treatment apart from transplant (min 5 year wait) or dialysis 4 hours, 3 days a week.

Just a little insight into mums world :)
