Mum's Kidney Journey

Wednesday 10th Apr
My mum Jenny was diagnosed with stage 1 Kidney Failure in 2009. She had a long journey towards dialysis which started in 2022. We had our first visit with the Big Red Kidney Bus in June 2023 at Port Stephens where we enjoyed whale watching and visiting local sites. We were due to go on another longer trip with them when mum passed away suddenly in March 2024. Dialysis made such a difference to mums quality of life the last few years and while often it was a challenge the benefits far outweighed the difficulties.
Mum and I went for 12 weeks of training with the Home Dialysis unit at RPA where we learnt the ins and outs of doing dialysis at home. Doing dialysis at home meant we spent more time together and less time in hospitals. But that doesn't mean it also wasn't a lot of work. But I don't think we would have done our journey differently. It was full of ups and downs, catching covid and teaching my wife, Libby, to help dialyse via facetime was a fun experience. We celebrated many birthdays in the dialysis room including mums 70th birthday last year.

We would like to thank all nurses from RPA and Dialysis Australia for helping us along this journey, and also thank the staff at Kidney Health Australia for all their support. If you are able, please consider making a donation so that maybe some other dialysis patients can enjoy the benefits and freedom that the Big Red Kidney allows.
