I was born in 2003 with hypoplastic kidneys. From a very young age, my family and I travelled to Brisbane every six months to see doctors and kidney specialists, where I had regular checkups and monitoring. As I got older, those appointments became yearly, and I continued seeing the same specialist until they retired.
In 2022, I transferred to a specialist in Lismore, where I was diagnosed with Stage 2 kidney disease. Growing up, it was hard to fully understand what having a kidney condition meant. I often felt like I was different from everyone else because of it. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realised I’m no different to anyone else I’m just another person living life, and my kidney disease doesn’t define who I am.
Living with kidney disease is something I think about every single day, but I don’t let it get in the way of living my life or chasing my goals. I focus on looking after myself by watching what I eat, reducing my sodium intake, staying well hydrated, and keeping active so I can stay as healthy as possible.
This journey has taught me not to take life for granted. Every day is a gift, and I make the most of every opportunity I get. I honestly don’t know where I’d be without my beautiful family by my side. Their love, strength and support have carried me through every challenge, and I couldn’t be more grateful for them.
Around 2.7 million Australian adults are living with signs of chronic kidney disease, and in 2024, chronic kidney disease contributed to around 21,300 deaths in Australia. Many people don’t even know they have kidney disease until it’s already progressed because the early stages often have no symptoms.
That’s why I’m sharing my story. I’m taking on this fundraiser to raise awareness of kidney disease, support those living with it, and help make a difference for future generations. If my journey encourages even one person to look after their kidney health or inspires someone facing a similar challenge, then it’s all worth it.
Every donation, no matter how big or small, means the world to me. Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for supporting this cause.
