I’ve been a runner now for over five years. I’ve raced half marathons, marathons and ultra marathons. But the most powerful runs I’ve been on are the runs that aren’t about me at all. It was the time I raised $6500 for @4asdkidscharity or the time @gem_e_d and I ran 50kms for @breastcancernow
The runs that aren’t selfish. They aren’t about me, my pace, my time. They have absolutely nothing to do with me and everything about those who need it. This is for our Mum. Every step, I will think about her and the hours, days, weeks, months and years she has spent in hospital. My Mum has been fighting the battle with cancer for years now, and my gosh she is strong. A part of all of this, had her kidneys failing. Last month, she started the journey of dialysis (the step to keep my Mum alive).
Australians living with kidney failure spend around 60 hours every month hooked up to dialysis. It can be scary, painful and can throw your body + mind. Three days a week, my Mum is hospital bound doing dialysis (most days she forgets what it’s called but I remind her that’s probably a good thing). This time my Mum doesn’t get back. This October, I’m running 60km in the Red Socks Run to raise funds and awareness. As I sat in her bed on my lunch break today, the very bed she doesn’t often move from unless it’s to go to dialysis, I told her I was doing this and I will never forget the look on her face. Not only am I doing this, but Mum, I am doing this for you. I love you.
