My Red Socks Run for Kidney Health

This October, I’m participating in the Red Socks Run for Kidney health research.

By running, walking & riding 60km I want to raise awareness of the 60hrs that people affected by kidney disease need to spend on dialysis each month. (My Dad needs dialysis over 60 hours a week!)

Please consider donating to my page to raise funds for research into life-saving treatments, and provide support to the families of the 66 Australians that lose their life each day to kidney disease.

Together WE can make a difference – Please donate if you can and help create a future where kidney health is a priority for all Australians. Thank you 💕

Reason behind my decision to doRed Socks Run

Sunday 3rd Sep
For those that don’t know, one of my favourite people in the world suffers from end stage kidney failure. My father was diagnosed with this condition in 2020 and  has been on dialysis since December 2020. Since then we have watched his life change completely.

Every single night, he needs to connect to a machine that attaches to a catheter that is permanently protruding from his belly. The machine automatically dialyses Dad for an 8-10 hour period throughout the night. This is called Peritoneal Dialysis.

He also attends the hospital once a week for another session of dialysis, this one is called Heamo dialysis and it’s done through a port-a-cath in his shoulder/chest. He’s connected to a machine for a 4 hour period and the machine dialyses him via his blood. This heamo treatment knocks him around quite a bit and often he gets AF (atrial fibrillation) and also erratic Blood Pressure readings.

He can only drink a maximum of 1 litre of fluid every day, this includes all fruit, yoghurt, custard, water etc as his body can’t flush any excess out.

When he’s on the peritoneal dialysis some nights his drain outputs/UF are very small, some nights they are quite large which is a good sign. The days he doesn’t have a good drain he can be quite tired, carrys a lot of fluid on his legs and gets lethargic and his AF plays up.

Both treatments have their good benefits and their negatives but we know that both treatments are saving his life and we are thankful he has access to both of these.

This isn’t a sob story, it’s just the ins and outs of Dads life now. He has his good days and he has his bad days. He knows this has to happen so he can continue to live his life. It’s been a big learning curve for the whole family and most importantly for Dad. He’s accepted it and looks at the positives in it.. he’s still able to holiday (with appropriate planning for hospitals etc), he can go out in his boat, he has most of his days free and most of all he’s still alive here with us all. He knows there are a lot of people who are also so much sicker and struggling worse than he is. He is thankful to be alive and takes each day as it comes.

There is currently no cure for kidney disease. Transplants are available but it’s not always the right solution for everyone and there are many hoops to jump through and obviously a waiting list. Dad is too old now for them to even consider him for a transplant.

This fundraiser is only a small way for me to help contribute towards future research for this disease. Hopefully one day they will find a cure and people suffering will no longer need to be attached to machines for hours every day or be on long waiting lists for transplants.

Any donation, no matter how big or small, will be so appreciated! Thank You 🙏🏼💕
