This October, I’m going to Red Socks Run as life depends on it.
By running, walking, or riding 60km I want to raise awareness of the 60hrs that people affected by kidney disease need to spend on dialysis each month.

Why I’m doing this challenge
Sunday 6th Oct As a dialysis nurse of many years this is a cause close to my heart. I work in haemodialysis but have some experience with peritoneal dialysis too. Kidney Health Australia are a wonderful organisation who do a lot of great work both for patients and health care professionals. They provide education, advocacy and many great services including the Big Red Kidney Bus which allows dialysis patients to have a well-deserved holiday while still receiving life-sustaining dialysis free of charge.I also believe there needs to be greater awareness of kidney disease. This is because kidney disease is very much a silent disease. A person may lose up to 90% of their kidney function before beginning to notice symptoms. But with greater awareness, the risk factors for kidney disease can be identified and kidney disease can be detected through a simple routine blood test. As with many diseases, the earlier it is diagnosed and treated, the more the progression can be slowed, which can prevent people from needing dialysis.
I’m hoping to both raise awareness of kidney disease and raise funds for Kidney Health Australia and ultimately create better patient outcomes.
